Barcelona’s late penalty appeal against Inter was ignored although Denzel Dumfries appeared to touch the ball with his hand inside the box.

The Dutch full-back prevented Ansu Fati from reaching the ball in the final minutes of tonight’s Champions League clash at San Siro, but Barcelona were not awarded a penalty kick despite a ‘silent’ VAR check.

Dumfries touched the ball with his hand inside the box, but referee Slavko Vincic was not urged by his VAR officials to have an on-field review to judge for himself, despite a very long check.

There was some confusion, partly because it seems the clearest camera angle was only at the disposal of Spanish television and not the VAR.

It comes after Juventus had a valid goal disallowed against Salernitana because the VAR did not have the camera angle to show Antonio Candreva keeping everyone onside.

Xavi seemed not happy at the touchline and vented his frustration after the final whistle.

“I am furious and outraged by the situation we had to experience. There is no word for this other than an outrage,” he told Spanish reporters after the game.

“It is an injustice. I already said yesterday that referees need to explain their decisions. We don’t understand what was happening. The referees need to speak, it will help to humanise them as well as clarify things.”

  1. Grande Don Beppe. They have finally mastered the dark arts of VAR in Europe’s biggest competition after perfecting it at home. Legends.

  2. CALMAAA!!!

Francesca. It was actually a sarcastic compliment. Even a donkey could see that the ball touched the hand. In today’s game that means penalty no matter what. But credit to Inter. They played well when they had the ball and with purpose. As I have said, Farcelona are a more polished version of the 7/9. They do not like back, back, down, down. Instead they prefer side to side and then some more side to side all whilst doing it at 5 mph and in circles. Lewandowski made a big mistake going there.

  3. The 50% league loss shaolin handball soccer club cannot win without refs. After setting a record for the lowest ball possession at home in the history of the UCL, the InZhangi prodigy, Dumbfries also tied Steph Curry on the MVP shortlist for best ball handles.

  4. The ball first touches his head and therefore it is correct not to give a penalty. He has no time to react after the ball deflects.

  5. That’s a clear penalty, a handball from Dumfries, The referee must be penalise for his actions.

  6. Inter is always given things from refs, last season they wouldn’t been close to ac milan if not for the refs help. MAAAAYBY theyd finish top 4 but thats a BIG maybe..

  7. @Transfer Guru

You are a comedian right? Inter were robbed in the derby when they were top as Sanchez was fouled by Giroud, not to mention Hakan being fouled before Raspadori scored and Perisic being fouled by Soriano before Arnautovic scored in Bologna. Get a clue

  8. It hit his hand yes. Was it deliberate no he isn’t even looking at the ball, it gave him no advantage to use use hand.

If that is a penalty watch Chelsea v Crystal Palace a deliberate hand ball on a potential 1-1 with keeper and it was only a yellow.
