Artem Dovbyk did not want to miss out on a move to Roma, so gave up over €1m of his own money to close out the deal with Girona.

The 27-year-old Ukrainian striker landed in the scorching heat of the Italian capital on Thursday and was greeted by over 200 Giallorossi fans. He immediately underwent his medicals before putting pen to paper on a five-year contract worth circa €3.5m net per season plus add-ons.

Roma will pay Girona a fixed €30.5m plus €5.5m in add-ons for Dovbyk, who’ll also have a 10% sell-on clause, an important investment from owner Dan Friedkin. The striker will immediately start working with Daniele De Rossi and his teammates ahead of the fast-approaching season opener.

Page four of today’s Corriere dello Sport details how Dovbyk had no intention of missing out on the move to Roma, so he willingly gave up €1.5m to help close out the deal with Girona.

The striker had a written agreement with the Spanish club that would’ve seen him earn €1.5m in the event of a sale, which he chose to waiver in order to push through the transfer.
