Deulofeu: ‘No Spain call without Milan’

Gerard Deulofeu thanks Milan for helping him win a Spain recall – ‘if not for them I wouldn’t be here’.

The winger joined the Rossoneri on loan from Everton in January, and three assists and a goal in his first nine Serie A games have earned him a recall for his country.

“If I hadn’t accepted Milan then I definitely wouldn’t have been called to the national team,” Deulofeu confirmed in a Press conference today.

“It’s a great club and right now I’m not thinking about anything else.

“I’m very happy at Milan, the Coach [Vincenzo Montella] and his staff have given me a lot of confidence and I’m also happy with the relationship with my teammates.

“When I learned of the interest from Milan I didn’t think twice about it. If I’m in this form then it’s thanks to the trust everyone at Milan has placed in me.

“I found the consistency I was looking for and now I’m a more mature and intelligent player. I’m getting better defensively and I’m more consistent over the 90 minutes.”

Deulofeu’s form has been so good, Barcelona have even hinted they could exercise their buyback option on him.

“I expected that question!” the 23-year-old laughed.

“It’s great to hear these things, but a player must only think of the present, otherwise you can lose your focus. We’ll see what happens in the future.

“I’ve learned to leave the past behind and think about the present, that’s all I’m focused on. The future will come, thinking about it can put you on the wrong path.

“Currently I’m on loan at Milan, I’m owned by Everton and Barça have a buyback option. I don’t think about it though, it would be a mistake.”
