Del Piero boosts Juventus Champions League hopes

After the arrival of Dusan Vlahovic, Juventus legend Alessandro Del Piero sees similarities between the current Juventus team and the Bianconeri squad that reached the Champions League Final in 2017.

Vlahovic hasn’t taken long to settle in Turin having scored one goal in his first two appearances with the Bianconeri since his €80m move from Fiorentina.

Vlahovic scored in Juventus’ 2-0 win over Hellas Verona in Serie A last week and forced Ruan Tressoldi to a late own goal that allowed the Bianconeri to qualify for the Coppa Italia semi-finals last night.

Massimiliano Allegri started Vlahovic, Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata against Verona, while the Spaniard was introduced as a sub during the second half of yesterday’s Coppa clash with the Neroverdi.

“I’ve seen similarities between this team and the squad that reached the Champions League Final in 2017,” Del Piero told Sky Sport Italia.

“They have Dybala, a centre forward and Morata playing wide on the left like [Mario] Mandzukic. The Spaniard never gives up, he runs a lot and helps the team.

“They are solid in defence and midfielders have a different attitude. If Allegri can play with all the three strikers up front, then he must do it.”

The Tuscan coach changed Juventus’ tactics in the middle of the 2016-17 campaign playing Gonzalo Higuain, Dybala, Mandzukic and Juan Cuadrado or Dani Alves in attack.

The Bianconeri beat Barcelona in the quarter-finals and Monaco in the semis but lost the Champions League Final in Cardiff 4-1 against Real Madrid.
