De Rossi favourite to be new Palermo coach

Former Roma and Italy great Daniele De Rossi is the hot favourite to become the new coach of Serie B side Palermo, hired by City Group.

The Sicilians have had a very active summer, as over the past three months they earned promotion to Serie B, the club was sold to the owners of Manchester City, then coach Silvio Baldini and his director of sport both abruptly resigned with pre-season already in full swing.

Their campaign officially kicks off on Saturday when they visit Torino in the first round of the Coppa Italia, but they are currently under a caretaker manager.

According to Sportitalia transfer expert Alfredo Pedullà, the new favourite is De Rossi, in what would be the 39-year-old’s first major coaching role.

After an entire career at Roma, the midfielder played six months at Boca Juniors before hanging up his boots in January 2020.

He then became part of Roberto Mancini’s Italy staff at EURO 2020, but is eager to get to work at club level.

Eugenio Corini had been the most likely contender for Palermo, especially as he has history with the club as both a player and a coach.
