Corvino: ‘Leave Chiesa alone!’

Fiorentina director general Pantaleo Corvino defends Federico Chiesa – “what I saw from the Atalanta directors after the game amazed me”.

The youngster has been heavily criticised for apparently diving to win a penalty at the weekend, a decision which was strangely not referred to VAR.

“Hands off Federico, I want to say that,” Corvino stated in an interview with Sky.

The youngster has been heavily criticised for apparently diving to win a penalty at the weekend, a decision which was strangely not referred to VAR.

“Hands off Federico, I want to say that,” Corvino stated in an interview with Sky.

“And hands off Fiorentina. What I saw from the Atalanta directors after the game amazed me and amazed us, not least because of what Federico has to put up with every weekend.

“Chiesa is a talent and dribbling is his best quality. Every Sunday he makes 30 metre runs, and sometimes he gets tired and tries to stop…

“If he’s touched by the defender’s hand and the referee sees it – even if it’s an imperceptible touch like [Vitor] Hugo’s fingertip in Milan [against Inter] – then you can concede a penalty.

“[Paolo] Valeri’s refereeing was flawless, one incident isn’t enough to condemn the performance of a referee who saw a hand on the back of a player who was slowing up.”
