Coppa: Scamacca completes derby comeback

Gianluca Scamacca scored two and created another, as Genoa fought back from Sampdoria’s opening goal to set up a Coppa Italia Round of 16 tie with Juventus.

This wasn’t just any Coppa Italia tie, but also a Derby della Lanterna between two arch-rivals both having difficult times recently in Serie A.

Samp had the stronger start and rattled the crossbar in the opening minutes through Antonino La Gumina, before Federico Marchetti flew to palm away an Adrien Silva effort.

Samp had the stronger start and rattled the crossbar in the opening minutes through Antonino La Gumina, before Federico Marchetti flew to palm away an Adrien Silva effort.

Valerio Verre eventually broke the deadlock with an unstoppable right-foot strike from outside the box into the far top corner.

However, Genoa’s on-form Italy Under-21 international Scamacca finished off a rapid counter-attack sparked by Shomurodov to equalise on the hour mark.

He then created the second goal, as Emil Audero only parried Scamacca’s header into the path of Lukas Lerager.

Genoa ran riot, Scamacca getting the third himself on the counter after Silva lost possession in midfield, adding to the equaliser he scored in their recent Serie A Derby della Lanterna.

Manolo Gabbiadini fired just over and Mikkel Damsgaard forced a save, but Samp crumbled in the second half.

Sampdoria 1-3 Genoa

Verre 18 (S), Scamacca 60, 72 (G), Lerager 68 (G)
