The first leg ended goalless in Manchester, but Cristiano Ronaldo was back in the starting XI after missing that match through injury.

Manchester City lost captain Vincent Kompany within 10 minutes at the Bernabeu, as he pulled up with yet another muscular problem and was replaced by Eliaquim Mangala.

Gareth Bale opened the scoring with a right-foot cross-shot from the right side of the box that bounced in off the inside of the far post. It would’ve been the Welshman’s first Champions League goal in 11 appearances, but UEFA credited it as a Fernando own goal due to the deflection.

Sergio Ramos bundled the ball over the line after a free kick, but Pepe was flagged offside, then Jese just failed to get on the end of a taut Marcelo cross.

Fernandinho’s strike clipped the outside of the post on 44 minutes, City’s first chance of the game, but after the restart Joe Hart was decisive on Luka Modric from point-blank range.

Hart denied Ronaldo twice from a header and angled drive, then he was beaten by a Bale header only to be rescued by the crossbar.

Lucas Vazquez risked a straight red for his reckless late tackle on Raheem Sterling and at the 89th minute a Sergio Aguero snapshot dipped viciously on to the roof of the net, as the Merengues feared they’d be punished for wasting so many chances.

Moments later Keylor Navas had to sprint outside his box to nod clear from Sterling, spraining his ankle in the process.
