Capello identifies Leao’s shortcomings and makes Maignan claim

Fabio Capello praises Milan and Rafael Leao, but acknowledges that the Portugal international is ‘sometimes too selfish.’

The Rossoneri climbed to the top of the table thanks to a 1-0 win over Napoli at the Stadio Maradona on Sunday night. Stefano Pioli’s men have a two-point lead over second-placed Inter, but the Nerazzurri have a game in hand.

Former coach Fabio Capello discussed Milan’s chances to win the Scudetto this season in an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Leao is a great player, very entertaining, even if he seems a little bit selfish lately. I want to be clear, it’s a small nitpick,” he said.

Has Capello been surprised by Stefano Pioli?

“He hasn’t always had the chance to build up from the back because he didn’t have suitable players. With the full squad available, you can see his work.

“The most surprising thing is that Milan defend well even without Simon Kjaer. Pierre Kalulu has become a solid option and makes no mistakes.

“I don’t think Milan are weaker than in the past. They’ve replaced a great goalkeeper with another great goalkeeper. They have a dynamic midfield with quality players. They have one of the best left wings in Europe with Theo and Leao.

“They’ve always played well against the top teams and reacted to difficult situations even if Inter remain the favourite for the title because they are more complete. Milan have many young players, so they don’t always get consistent results.”
