Borriello tipped for Italy recall

Giampiero Ventura is expected to call Marco Borriello in place of Simone Zaza and Mario Balotelli for Italy’s World Cup qualifiers with Spain and Macedonia.

The Azzurri continue their campaign leading up to the 2018 tournament in Russia.

They host Spain at the Juventus Stadium in Turin on October 6 and then visit Skopje on October 9.

According to La Repubblica, there will be a shock recall for veteran Cagliari striker Borriello, as the 34-year-old has scored eight goals in seven competitive games this season.

According to La Repubblica, there will be a shock recall for veteran Cagliari striker Borriello, as the 34-year-old has scored eight goals in seven competitive games this season.

Borriello has seven senior caps for Italy, but hasn’t been called up since facing Germany in a 1-1 draw in February 2011.

He is set to receive the nod rather than younger options Zaza and Balotelli, who are both trying to find their feet in new Leagues.

Zaza is yet to score at West Ham United amid rumours he could return to Juventus in January.

There had been some tipping Balotelli for an Italy nod for the first time since the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, as he has rediscovered his form at OGC Nice.

However, SuperMario has also struggled with injury concerns over the last week.

Other changes to Ventura’s Azzurri side could see Francesco Acerbi of Sassuolo picked rather than not 100 per cent fir Davide Astori of Fiorentina.

Potential Italy squad:

Buffon, Donnarumma, Perin; Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini, Romagnoli, Ogbonna, De Sciglio, Astori (Acerbi); Candreva, Parolo, Montolivo, Verratti, De Rossi, Bonaventura, Bernardeschi, Florenzi; Pellè, Eder, Immobile, Belotti, Gabbiadini, Borriello (Zaza)
