The two clubs have agreed a fee of around €14m for the 21-year-old and the transfer is close to completion.

Roma only signed the Italian international outright last month from Parma. The Giallorossi will make a profit of around €5m on the former Swansea and Chelsea player.

Borini, a member of Italy’s Euro 2012 squad, only returned to Serie A last summer when his contract at Stamford Bridge expired.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers knows the player well after coaching him while with Swansea.

The Stadio Olimpico outfit are now expected to reinvest the Borini fee on Siena and Genoa striker Mattia Destro.

Roma, why sell Borini? Roma’s consideration to sell Fabio Borini to Liverpool – even if it subsequently allowed Mattia Destro to join the club – is questioned by Antonio Labbate.
