Balotelli: ‘Lautaro ahead of Lewandowski, few better than him’

Mario Balotelli had high praise for Inter star Lautaro Martinez and suggested it was right for Roma’s Romelu Lukaku to be sent off against Fiorentina.

Lautaro has continued to shine for Inter this season, playing a leading role in their charge to the top of the Serie A table and the Champions League knockout stages. This term, he’s scored 16 goals and provided four assists in 21 matches across all competitions.

Lukaku has performed well with Roma since joining from Chelsea on loan this summer, netting 11 goals in 18 appearances across all competitions. He scored the opener in the fifth minute but was shown a red card in the 87th minute after a foul on Christian Kouame.

Speaking to TvPlay via Calciomercato.com, Balotelli first discussed the penalty awarded to Inter in their win over Udinese.

“It’s a penalty. I’m not sure if Lautaro gets there, but the centre back is sure he won’t get there. Lautaro was also an expert, because I’ll throw myself if they pull my shoulder and I’m not sure I’ll get to the ball.”

He was asked how many times he hadn’t been awarded a similar penalty.

“A lot, but I also took penalties that weren’t there. There should be a yardstick. Inter play well and have very strong players.”

The Adana Demirspor striker then praised the qualities of the Inter captain.

“He’s really strong, I see very few attackers stronger than him. I’ll put Lautaro ahead of Lewandowski. It would be phenomenal if he and Osimhen played together.”

Finally, Balotelli gave his thoughts on Lukaku’s work in Roma’s draw with Fiorentina.

“His goal was really beautiful, he also had courage in going down with his head. Red card was there. He’s not terrible, but it’s a bad foul because it could’ve broken his leg.”
