Ancelotti: ‘I’ve already sent Maldini a message’

Carlo Ancelotti was pleased to see his former club Milan progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League after defeating Serie A league leaders Napoli 2-1 over two legs.

Tuesday night’s result was the perfect outcome for Ancelotti, who had previously stated that he would love a final between Milan and Real Madrid, the two clubs which have brought him the most success in his extensive coaching career.

The Real Madrid coach won four Champions League titles during his various spells with Milan, including two as a player, two while in charge in 2003 and 2007 as well as a runners-up medal in this year’s final host city, Istanbul in 2005.

The successful European campaign under Ancelotti 16 years ago was also the most recent occasion Milan featured in the semi-final stage of the Champions League.

When asked by Sky Sport Italia if he remembered the final against Liverpool in 2007, Ancelotti responded: “I tell you? 16 years ago what was it? 2007. 2007 in Athens.”

Ancelotti then went on to explain why he was pleased for both of his former clubs, Milan and Napoli, and revealed that he has already congratulated his former player and current director Paolo Maldini.

“A great achievement,” he said. “Congratulations to the whole club and to Paolo. I also have affection for Napoli who had an extraordinary championship, they were the best Italian team this season and they deserve all the respect. They will try next year.

“A message to Maldini? I’ve already sent him a message.”
