Marcos Alonso was “not sure until the last minute” whether he’d stay at Fiorentina, but is now eager for his first goal.

The defender spent last season on loan at Sunderland and it looked for a while as if he’d stay there on a permanent basis.

“I was not sure until the last minute whether I’d be staying at Fiorentina. When I realised that I was staying, I knew I’d have to give my best, because wearing this jersey is important for me,” he told Radio Blu.

“I was happy in England and was even voted player of the year thanks to the Sunderland manager, who really believed in me. I haven’t spoken to the club about a renewal, but it’s not important right now. I am happy and I want to stay in Florence.

“I hope to score my first goal in a Fiorentina jersey against Lazio on Sunday and I am really training hard to make that happen. I don’t have a celebration planned, so if I score then I’ll just improvise.”

Fiorentina are targeting a top three finish and Marcos Alonso believes their 3-0 drubbing of Inter can be a turning point.

“I don’t know how far we can go, as we have important players who are injured, but the team is made of more than just two elements and we proved that. Beating Inter gave us confidence.”
