Reports of contact between President Aurelio De Laurentiis and former coach Rafael Benitez, recently freed from his contractual ties with Dalian, sparked rumours of an early departure for Gattuso this winter.

According to Sportitalia, however, the Napoli owner did call another former Azzurri coach, namely Maurizio Sarri.

The 62-year-old, who was sacked by Juventus last summer and has one year and a half left on his contract with the Old Lady, reportedly rejected to chance to return to Napoli.

Gattuso knew about the conversation between the former Napoli coach and his President and vented his frustration after a 2-0 win over Parma on Sunday.

When asked about his relationship with De Laurentiis, Gattuso replied:

“It has always been a good relationship, but I can’t deny that after the last 15 to 20 days, there has been some disappointment on my part for everything that has happened.

“I’m not a hypocrite. But there’s great respect. He never made me miss out on anything. I’m an employee of his, I asked him for [Tiemoue] Bakayoko and he gave him to me, there’s great respect.”

According to Sky Sport, the 2006 Italy World Cup winner could leave the Stadio Maradona at the end of the season.
