Italian legend Dino Zoff always expected Gigi Buffon to reach and then surpass his 112 caps for the Azzurri.

The current Juventus custodian will draw level with the former Juventus ‘keeper this evening when Italy face Uruguay in Rome.

“I’ve always said, from the very start, that Buffon was very strong,” the 1982 World Cup winning captain told Radio Sportiva.

“The incredible career that he has had is only a natural consequence of the qualities which he possesses as a player.

“If he can stay fit, then Buffon will surpass my Italy record with no problems whatsoever,” he continued.

“He’s still young and can achieve a lot more in his career.

“However, he won’t beat my record of consecutive games for Juventus. He won’t be able to match that…”

Zoff once played in 332 successive Serie A games for the Old Lady of Italian football.

Buffon, who will be 34 in January, made his debut for Italy in a 1-1 draw with Russia back in October 1997.

Fabio Cannavaro, on 136 caps, and Paolo Maldini, 126, will be Buffon’s next targets in terms of international appearances.
