Things went from bad to worse for La Roja after only three minutes, when Nacho’s clumsy challenge brought down Cristiano Ronaldo in the box and Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi pointed to the spot.

The Portuguese captain took the spot kick himself and the result was never in doubt, with the Real Madrid man sending David De Gea the wrong way.

Spain equalised through Diego Costa, but the goal wasn’t without controversy.

The Atletico Madrid striker clashed with Pepe as both went for a high ball, with the Portuguese centre-back collapsing to the floor.

Costa played on, twisting this way and that before firing the ball past Rui Patricio.

Following a VAR review, it was decided that the striker hadn’t fouled Pepe in the build-up and the goal stood.

Isco then smashed one off the crossbar, with goal line technology proving that the rebound hadn’t crossed the line.

Andres Iniesta then went within inches of giving the Spanish the lead, with his dragged shot trickling just wide of the far post.

It appeared the teams would go into the break level, but De Gea handed Portugal a gift.

Ronaldo’s shot from the edge of the area was straight at the goalkeeper, but he somehow contrived to allow the ball through his hands and into the back of the net.

Shortly after the break, Costa joined Ronaldo on two goals, but it was terrible defending from Portugal.

Koke hung one up to the far post, where Sergio Busquets was on hand to head it back across the goal.

Costa was left completely unmarked in the middle, and turned the ball into the gaping goal.

If that goal was sloppy, Spain’s third was simply sublime.

As Portugal attempted to clear the ball, it rebounded off Bruno Carvalho and spun away to the edge of the box.

It was a very difficult ball to take, but Nacho cut across the ball with his right foot to send it fizzing past Rui Patricio, the ball smacking both posts before crossing the line.

Portugal pushed hard for an equaliser, but it looked as though Fernando Hierro’s side would hold on for a crucial win.

However, with just minutes to play Gerard Pique conceded a free-kick on the edge of the box.

Ronaldo had never scored a free-kick at a major international tournament, but he was focus personified as he lined up the strike.

The Real Madrid man curled his kick over the wall, sealing his hat-trick and a point for his side with a stunning effort.
