2023-24 Scudetto: What Inter now need to win Serie A title against Milan next weekend

Lautaro Martinez of Inter celebrates winning the Serie A title / Scudetto in 2020-21

Following Inter’s 2-2 draw with Cagliari on Sunday evening, the 2023-24 Serie A champions could be officially confirmed during the Derby della Madonnina between the Nerazzurri and rivals Milan next weekend.

In order for Inter to be mathematically confirmed as Serie A champions next weekend, they require a 16-point advantage over the team in second place in the league by full-time of their game against Milan.

After the conclusion of the 32nd round of Serie A fixtures, Inter’s gap at the top of the Serie A table currently stands at 14 points.

As both Inter and Milan drew this weekend, Inter will need to beat Milan in the derby at San Siro next weekend in order to confirm the 2023-24 Scudetto.

If they do so, their lead at the top of the Serie A table will extend to 17 points and they will officialluy be confirmed as Serie A champions on the San Siro pitch, even if they are technically the ‘away’ team in that fixture.

What Inter will no longer be able to do as a result of Sunday’s draw with Cagliari, however, is beating the all-time Serie A record for points in a single season. That feat was set at 102 points by Antonio Conte and Juventus in 2013-14, and Inter needed to win all of their games until the end of the 2023-24 campaign in order to surpass that figure.
