Vieri: ‘Chiellini key for Juve’

Former Italy international Christian Vieri believes Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini’s return will help Andrea Pirlo lead the Old Lady to their 10th consecutive Scudetto.

The 36-year-old centre-back was injured in the first match of the 2019-20 campaign and only appeared four times in Serie A last term.

The captain has recovered from the ACL rupture he suffered after scoring the winner against Parma in Week 1 last term and Vieri believes a Chiellini ‘at the top’ will be decisive.

“I think [Juventus will win Serie A], especially if Chiellini will be fine,” Vieri told Corriere della Sera. “With him at the top, the Scudetto discussion risks ending very soon.

“Juve have a devastating squad, it’s already a great team on its own, clearly stronger than the others. And with the captain in good condition, the whole group will be lifted, not just the defensive phase.

“Chiellini is one of the best defenders in the world. He has quality, charisma, physique, and mental strength.

“His presence on the pitch drags the others.”
