Sky Sport Italia suggest the fans arrived in the club house during dinner and demanded respect for the shirt, but then became furious when some players turned their backs.
The incident apparently occurred at 19.00 UK time (18.00 GMT), though the news only leaked out late into the evening. News agency ANSA claim the club "confirmed the story."
Coach Zdenek Zeman held the usual morning training session, then cancelled the afternoon get-together, though the reason was not known.
A statement was on the Cagliari website outlining the training schedule, but made no mention of any incident.
Cagliari are in penultimate place in the Serie A table on 21 points, eight adrift of Atalanta and safety.
