UEFA have formally opened a disciplinary investigation into Italy’s Under-21 European Championship qualifier with Sweden after Anthony Elanga alleged he received racist abuse.
The game ended 1-1 on October 12 with a last-gasp Swedish equaliser from Tim Prica in Monza.
Elanga was booked for ‘goading’ the Italy fans behind the goal during his stoppage-time celebrations, then there was more tension after the final whistle.
The Swedish Federation claimed Manchester United striker Elanga received racist abuse from an Italy player, something the FIGC has firmly denied.
UEFA have now announced they have opened a disciplinary investigation into the incidents that occurred during the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying match between Italy and Sweden.
The Italian Federation (FIGC) assured it will fight to defend its players in any investigation, insisting there was no racist insult in the tense clashes that occurred after the final whistle.
There were also mixed reports as to whether the investigation included some possible racist insults from the crowd.
