The Ligue 1 champions begin their campaign tomorrow against Caen, but Verratti and Layvant Kurzawa will not be taking part.

“Verratti had surgery (on his adductors) at the end of last season and he is still suffering a little bit,” said Tuchel in a Press conference.

“Considering his past record with injuries, it is best not to risk it and we want to be extra careful. We’ll take all the time we need to get him back in shape.”

Buffon joined as a free agent from Juventus, but is battling for the gloves with Alphonse Areola and even Kevin Trapp.

When asked who will start tomorrow’s Ligue 1 opener, Tuchel kept everyone guessing.

“Buffon is a top player, a legend and a great professional, as he brings such a strong influence to the locker room. We have three very talented goalkeepers and I want to talk to them before making a decision.

“I don’t want to make a choice too quickly.”
