Roma legend Francesco Totti expressed his surprise and support for coach Daniele De Rossi following the former midfielder’s incredible start in the Giallorossi dugout.
De Rossi was brought in to be the temporary replacement for Jose Mourinho back in January after the Special One’s dismissal, with many expecting the former midfielder to simply be an interim option until the end of the season.
The 2006 World Cup winner has exceeded expectations in the Roma dugout, winning seven of his first nine Serie A matches in charge, putting the club just three points behind fourth place Bologna. He’s also taken the team to the Europa League quarter-finals, where they’ll face Milan.
Speaking at a Betsson Sport event via TMW, Totti first gave his thoughts on the work of De Rossi in the Roma dugout.
“I didn’t expect him to do so well right away, but I hoped so. He is proving to be a great coach and I, like all the Giallorossi fans, hope he continues at these levels.
“Roma are a difficult club and are demonstrating their value. Knowing the city, the fans and the club are doing well and therefore he is bringing all this together to ensure that the players perform with maximum peace of mind.”
He commented on Lorenzo Pellegrini’s position as captain.
“After De Rossi it was really difficult to find another captain, previously I had already said that Lorenzo is a real captain, from Rome. Now he is also physically well and can do everything.”
The former Roma and Italy striker weighed in on the Europa League quarter-final tie with Milan.
“The Rossoneri are doing well, they have found three or four players of quality and quantity. It will be a wonderful match, I hope that Roma get through.”
Finally, Totti was asked if Milan’s history in Europe could make the difference.
“It will be an additional factor for them, but they are no longer the Milan they once were.”
