Torino stadium plan approved

Torino have won approval from the city council to rename their stadium as Stadio Grande Torino.

The Granata are looking to have the Stadio Olimpico named after their legendary team of the 1940s, almost all of whom were killed in a plane crash at Superga in 1949.

The mayor of Turin said yesterday that he was in favour of the plan, and today the proposal went before the municipality.

The motion was unanimously approved, and will now pass to Prefecture, which is almost certain to approve the change of name.

In addition, a piece of the renovated Stadio Filadelfia will be renamed after former President Orfeo Pianelli.
