Ex-Roma midfielder Damiano Tommasi has revealed his plans for making Italian football “the centre of attention again” if he were to become FIGC President.

Tommasi’s prospects were boosted by Francesco Totti throwing his support behind his old teammate last week, and the head of the Italian Players’ Union admits he has already discussed the role with his employers.

“Totti sees me as President of the FIGC? Francesco is a friend, however, given the situation, I don’t even know how much he does!” he told Corriere della Sera.

“Jokes aside, I’m happy that there are so many people who respect me and consider me as the man to renew Italian football.

“I’ve talked about it within the AIAC, but it’s not down to me. No-one is an automatic candidate, plus there are many former players who could do the job.

“If I’m pressed, I’d say it’s too early to say. Other things are more important at the moment.

“Plan to renew Italian football? I want the game to be the centre of attention again, that youth football is launched again, from non-League level to A, which would work unequivocally.

“There’s no collaboration between the various categories. We can’t re-present ourselves with the same ideas and by thinking about our own backyard.

“A step forward is needed, and the collective good must come before that of a single member. It seems easy, but it’s not.

“Tavecchio? From a technical point of view, he managed the Sweden fallout very badly.

“It was necessary to have the courage to appear in the Press room after our World Cup failure.

“From a political point of view, however, he’s only ever worked, concerning himself about getting a majority.”
