Thiago Motta: ‘Different competition within Serie A’

Spezia coach Thiago Motta celebrated their first win of the season, 2-1 away to Venezia, warning the relegation battle is ‘a different competition’ within Serie A.

They had taken an early lead through Simone Bastoni, cancelled out by a Pietro Ceccaroni header, but Medhi Bourabia scored a stunner in stoppages to secure the victory.

“It was a big performance from the lads, I am very happy with the attitude shown and above all the three points,” Thiago Motta told DAZN.

Not only is this the first win of the season, it’s also the first ever away victory in Thiago Motta’s Serie A management career.

“It was a balanced game, and I think we’re in frankly a different competition to the teams that are higher up the table, so this was a very important match for us and the points will weigh heavily.”

Spezia talent Jacopo Sala pulled the midfield strings and wandered around the pitch in various different roles when needed.

“We studied during the week in training, but the players deserve credit. Jacopo Sala worked really well on the wing, he sometimes cut inside to play in midfield in training and provides a sense of balance to the team.

“I am here to help, I’m open to discussing my decisions with the lads, I want them all to be at ease and feel comfortable in their roles.”

Janis Antiste was used as a centre-forward, as Kevin Agudelo and Ebrima Colley are both out of action for at least a month.

“I am satisfied with Antiste’s work-rate, he has settled in very quickly and tries to help his teammates off the ball. He can improve in his finishing and we’re trying to help him with that.

“M’Bala Nzola managed 15 minutes, he needs time to regain full fitness and ought to combine more with his teammates.”
