The Uruguay forward is now facing a race against time after undergoing meniscus surgery yesterday on an injury the Association Uruguaya de Futbol say he sustained during Liverpool’s final game of the season.

On from the procedure, which the AUF say does not rule him out of participation at this summer’s World Cup, the player went to Twitter to post his own message.

“Thank you very much for the messages of support, love and encouragement throughout the day!” Suarez wrote on Thursday evening.

“The strength that my loved ones give me will make me work hard to reach the World Cup. My family and I are very grateful to all of you!”

Suarez’s Uruguay are drawn in Group D of this summer’s competition, alongside Costa Rica, England and Cesare Prandelli’s Italy.
