Stankovic: ‘Red Star never give up’

Dejan Stankovic was more than happy with the 2-2 draw after Red Star Belgrade went down to 10 men against Milan. ‘We never gave in.’

The Rossoneri had twice taken the lead in Belgrade, with an own goal and Theo Hernandez penalty, but were pegged back by a spot-kick and stoppage-time Milan Pavkov header.

“Milan are deadly and very quick on the counter,” Stankovic told Sky Sport Italia after the first leg of the Europa League Round of 32 tie.

“We never gave in and I am happy for the lads. This was like a derby for me, then we’ll see what happens with the real one on Sunday.”

There were 1,000 fans outside the stadium with loudspeakers to make their voices heard, even though the game was behind closed doors.

“I have had the privilege of playing at a packed Marakana, and I can confirm the atmosphere really does make a difference. It’s a pity, but we can only hope football can return to normality as soon as possible.”

It was certainly heated on the touchline, as Stankovic and Milan coach Stefano Pioli were arguing at several points during the game.

“It’s normal during a match, it all stays on the field.”
