Former Milan President Silvio Berlusconi said Vincenzo Montella “understands very little” about football, reveals Sassuolo patron Giorgio Squinzi.
There were already quotes from Berlusconi in the Corriere della Sera yesterday bitterly criticising the tactician and the way the current club hierarchy are conducting business.
It seems this is far from a new phenomenon and stretches back to when he first sold the club back in April.
“On Easter Saturday, Inter and Milan were playing in the derby and at half-time Stefano Pioli’s side was 2-0 up,” Squinzi – a lifelong Milan supporter – told La Gazzetta dello Sport.
“I remember that day Berlusconi called me during the half-time break. He told me: ‘That Coach understands very little.’ He was not happy with Montella.”
It seems as if Squinzi is far from impressed with L’Aeroplanino either.
“I think Montella should be allowed to get on with his work, just as Cristian Bucchi should at Sassuolo. Personally, I don’t think Montella is the right Coach to bring us back into the Champions League. He’s not a great tactician, but a good one.”
There are other decisions Squinzi would not have made in the place of Milan chiefs Yonghong Li, Marco Fassone and Massimiliano Mirabelli.
“I would’ve waited before giving Leonardo Bonucci the armband. He might be the best captain in the world, but in my view you give the armband to someone who is listened to in the locker room and knows the squad.”
