Spalletti: ‘We need an Italy that lives up to history’

Luciano Spalletti looked ahead to Italy’s crucial Euro 2024 qualifier with North Macedonia, noting how his squad have prepared for the match ‘with confidence’.

The Azzurri need to find wins in their final two qualifiers against North Macedonia and Ukraine to automatically book their spot in next summer’s European Championship in Germany. Falling short would leave Spalletti’s side in the play-offs.

Ukraine currently sit three points ahead of Italy in Group C but have played an extra game. Should Italy beat North Macedonia, they’d have everything to play for against Serhiy Rebrov’s side in their final qualifier on November 20.

Speaking to Sky Sports Italia via TMW, Spalletti first discussed the mindset in Coverciano ahead of Italy’s match with North Macedonia.

“We are professionals who have to write our own history through these matches. We are going to build the image we will have in the world through these results.

“We have prepared very well, we have a very good team at our disposal and therefore we are preparing for these matches with confidence. Having played a few games, we already have a frame to start from.”

He reflected on the Azzurri’s path in the Euro 2024 qualifiers so far and what could’ve gone differently.

“There was a need to get a result in the previous matches too. In North Macedonia we could have done something more, but even that victory wouldn’t have changed the path.

“Something could’ve changed the match at Wembley, but there we faced an excellent England team. There’s a habit in playing these matches and even though it’s a short journey we’ve brought some things home.”

The Italy coach spoke about what his players need to show against North Macedonia.

“We need an Italy that lives up to its history and its modernity of play, we need an Italy that has strong characters and players who know how to deal with these situations.

“We need to show where we are in our world, we need to carry forward our idea of football. And then we must be willing to do anything for our nation.”

Finally, Spalletti discussed what Chiesa brings to the Italy squad.

“Many things. He has this ability, he knows how to beat the opponent and score. He has a very high level personality, he is a reference for our national team and we are very happy to have him available.”
