Spadafora: ‘I was angry’

Italy’s Minister of Sport Vincenzo Spadafora claims the resumption of football represents ‘an important signal’ for the country.

Serie A has set a date for the resumption of Serie A and will start again more than three months after the interruption of 2019-20 but Spadafora still crosses his fingers to avoid further complications down the line.

“It’s an important signal because the country is starting up again,” Spadafora told Tg5. “Sport and football become protagonists in this sense.

“It’s possible to resume safely now and respect everyone’s health. There have been some difficult moments when the numbers of infected remained high. Even now I keep my fingers crossed and hope that the championship can go all the way.”

The chief of Sport in Italy has overseen a host of arguments between Presidents and revealed he was angry when asked to resume the championship a month back.

“I have certainly seen very different Presidents. However, all of them are passionate about their world and interested in the big turnover.

“I’m the bogeyman of football? I was very angry when they asked me to resume a month ago and we still had problems with the intensive care or transferring the coffins to the vehicles of the Ministry of Defence.

“I found it absurd to ask me for a date at that moment, today, it’s right that football can start again.”
