“From the start this squad has been aware it can compete against anyone and we want to stay high up the standings. We can and must put in a good performance,” said the Coach in a Press conference.

Sousa was asked about the apparently failed attempts to sign River Plate defender Emmanuel Mammana.

“I am neither disappointed nor surprised. I am just concentrated on what my lads are doing. Tomorrow’s game requires psychological and physical intensity, because Genoa press you all over the pitch.

“We’ve needed a new defender since August, I don’t want to talk about it anymore because otherwise it looks as if I’m complaining. The club knows what we need to compete at a certain level.”

There have been some new signings over the January window, including Mauro Zarate, Cristian Tello and ex-Genoa midfielder Tino Costa.

“Tello is an important player, very quick and good at taking men on. He can give us a big hand with his change of pace and also create spaces for his teammates.

“We have more variations than before and can adjust the midfield without affecting our principles. We could also change system, but it’ll take time before putting that into practice.

“All the new players need to slowly get into our mechanisms.”
