Napoli are moving forward with Zenit, matching Everton’s €25m offer, and have agreed personal terms with Axel Witsel, it’s reported.
The club-affiliated Radio Kiss Kiss Napoli said as much earlier on Saturday, but that was denied by Zenit’s Press office to the TASS news agency in Russia.
Sky Sport Italia pundit Gianluca Di Marzio insists that denial was just a formality from Zenit, but talks are continuing at pace.
Napoli have matched Everton’s transfer fee by offering €23m plus €2m bonuses.
Above all, unlike the Toffees, they have agreed personal terms with a four-year contract and option for a fifth at €2.7m plus €0.5m add-ons.
Witsel has a contract with a sponsor, but that is set to expire in January, so should not be too much of an issue for Napoli and their image rights demands.
The Belgium international midfielder is currently on vacation in Sardinia – reportedly in the same venue as Napoli star Lorenzo Insigne – and Sky claim there will be a meeting between Napoli and his entourage on Sunday.
