Siena have released a statement after reports that President Massimo Mezzaroma and ex-Coach Antonio Conte were accused in the betting scandal.

Conte and the club are officially under investigation, while many news sources are publishing extracts from ex-Siena player Filippo Carobbio’s interrogation.

These include allegations President Mezzaroma sent word to the locker room that Siena should lose a match against Varese so that he could profit by betting against his own team.

Carobbio also claimed Conte and his staff knew of the request, but both team and Coach refused.

“From the start of the investigation into betting, the attitude of AC Siena was not to run after the leaking of news stories, but to fully respect the work of the magistrates and wait to defend ourselves in the opportune arenas,” read a club statement this evening.

“Repeating that this attitude does not represent acquiescence, we will be ready to prove ourselves if and when we are called to testify.”
