Serie B: Pisa eliminate Benevento to reach play-off final

Pisa are in the Serie B promotion play-off final after their 1-0 victory over Benevento, which proved enough thanks to a superior placement in the regular season.

Benevento had won the first leg of this semi-final 1-0, but Ahmad Benali found the net just 11 minutes into this evening’s return fixture, getting on the end of a George Puscas cross.

That made the result 1-1 on aggregate, so under the current Serie B play-off format rules, the team with the best finish during the regular season goes through.

In this case, that is Pisa, as the Tuscans came in third on 67 points compared to Benevento in seventh on 63 points.

A brawl broke out after the final whistle, while Peru international and Benevento striker Gianluca Lapadula – who had scored in the first leg – was inconsolable.

Now Pisa will face either Brescia or Monza in the play-off final, which is also going to be over two legs.

Lecce and Cremonese were already promoted directly after taking the top two spots in the Serie B standings.
