Scuffet to start in Serie A after 925 days

With Juan Musso suspended against Juventus, Udinese turn to former teenage sensation Simone Scuffet for his first Serie A start in 925 days.

The goalkeeper was considered the new Gigi Buffon when he made his debut aged just 17 years and eight months in Udinese’s 2-0 win away to Bologna in February 2014.

His name was all over the papers and the then-teenager famously turned down a move to Atletico Madrid.

He never quite flourished, with loan spells at Como, Spezia and Turkish club Kasimpasa before returning to base for the 2020-21 season.

Scuffet played just one game this term, the 3-1 Coppa Italia victory over Vicenza on October 28, 2020.

“I am convinced that I’m a better goalkeeper now than I was when I made my debut,” said Scuffet last year.

“It’s just that errors are forgiven in your first year, not your second. I turned down Atletico Madrid because I thought it was better to continue the learning process here. Now, I feel it was absolutely the right decision. Maybe a year on the bench in Udine helps you learn more than a year in Spain.”

He’ll have to step in for suspended Musso against Juventus on Sunday, a full 925 days after his last Serie A start, hosting Napoli on October 20, 2018.

Scuffet is now 24 and did help Spezia to their first ever promotion into Serie A last season.
