Sassuolo and Serie A are in mourning following the death of President Giorgio Squinzi, at the age of 76.
He was the patron of the Mapei company and the architect of Sassuolo’s rise from Serie C to the top flight and even Europa League football.
Squinzi never hid the fact he was a supporter of Milan, despite purchasing Sassuolo in 2002.
He had been suffering from a long illness, largely handing over the running of the club to his staff.

The Neroverdi were in Serie C2 when Squinzi took over, but they earned promotion to Serie B in 2008 and made the step up to Serie A for the 2013-14 campaign.
By the 2015-16 season, Eusebio Di Francesco’s men had secured sixth place in Serie A and qualified for the Europa League for the first time in their history.
