Rome set for Euro 2020 decision

UEFA will today announce the host cities for Euro 2020, with Rome’s bid seen as likely to be a successful, in spite of uncertainty this week.

The Stadio Olimpico in the capital is Italy’s nominated ground bidding to be one of 13 host cities across the European continent to host the unique inter-country edition of the European Championships in six years’ time.

The Gazzetta dello Sport, however, indicate that there is a slight concern over Roma’s candidacy, following clashes between CSKA Moscow supporters and stewards during the Russian club’s midweek Champions League match against Roma.

“UEFA cannot tolerate such scenes,” UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino has commented this week.

“This will open a disciplinary procedure, but I cannot anticipate the penalties.

“It’s up to the disciplinary committee to decide.”

Despite the concerns, the Gazzetta dello Sport suggest that Rome is still most likely to be awarded one of the hosting packages available, in part due to its location as the only Mediterranean-based location in consideration.
