The reason Roma are looking for defenders as free agents is because Chris Smalling is said to be in advanced talks with Al-Fayha FC.
There had already been some suggestions from Sky Sport Italia that Smalling would not necessarily continue at the Stadio Olimpico this season due to interest from the Saudi Pro League.
He was training separately from the squad today at the Trigoria ground, further fuelling speculation he is not part of their plans.
Now Footmercato have named the club, reporting that Roma and Smalling are in advanced negotiations for the sale to Al-Fayha FC.
The transfer window in the Saudi Pro League is still open until September 2, so there is time to complete the move.
Smalling replacement must be free agent
While Roma cannot buy any new players now the Italian transfer deadline has passed, they can sign free agents.
The plan therefore is to pursue both Mario Hermoso and Mats Hummels, who are still looking for somewhere to play this season after a summer of talks with numerous teams.
