The Giallorossi were one of a number of clubs looking at the former Manchester United player last summer.
However, Villarreal’s €25m asking price cooled their interest before the Spanish club opted against selling him at all.
Rossi, who was hoping to be ready for Euro 2012 until his latest fitness setback in April, could be available for a lot less this time around.
Villarreal were relegated this term and players such as Rossi, and defender Cristian Zapata, could be sold at a reduced price.
There are suggestions that Rossi may be sacrificed for €10m, although Villarreal are keen to include bonus clauses which would see that transfer fee rise in the future.
