Retegui reacts to first Serie A goal and Spalletti’s Italy appointment

Genoa and Italy striker Mateo Retegui hopes to be called up by new Azzurri coach Luciano Spalletti: ‘I know I have to do well with the club,’ he said after scoring his first Serie A goal against Lazio.

Retegui inspired Genoa’s 1-0 win over Lazio on Sunday with his first goal in Italy’s top flight.

“I had scored two goals against Modena [in Coppa Italia] so this is the third [of the season],” he told DAZN after the final whistle.

“The important thing is that the team played a good game and that we went back home with three important points taken on a tricky pitch.

“I focus on one game at a time. It was good to win the first game today, we’ll see what happens.”

New Italy coach Spalletti will announce his first squad list this week. Retegui made his senior Azzurri debut in March under Roberto Mancini and has two goals in three games with the Azzurri.

“I have a lot of desire to be part of the team and I know I need to do well with the club to return,” he said. “However, today’s win is the most important thing.”
