Pepe Reina believes Napoli can win the Scudetto and explains why he left Liverpool to reunite with “guarantee” Rafa Benitez.
The goalkeeper arrived on loan for this season and spoke to Spanish radio station Cadena Ser.
“Napoli are the best solution for me. I will give my all this season, then we’ll see. I am playing for a great club that will fight to win the Scudetto and impress in the Champions League. I had been missing both those elements,” said Reina.
“We are building a fine squad that will go back to the top. Benitez is a guarantee, as he’s a great Coach who was able to get the best out of me. He’s the best manager I worked with, the city is beautiful and I’d perhaps have come to Napoli anyway, but Rafa’s presence made it easier.”
Liverpool confirmed they released Reina because his wages were weighing on the club coffers and he criticised the Reds on his personal website this week.
“I am not angry with Liverpool, in fact I am very grateful for all they’ve given me. My departure was not the way I expected, but I will always be grateful.
“Everyone has to look to their own interests and this was the best solution. Now I will try to enjoy a year at Napoli, then look forward. I’m very proud to have played 400 games for Liverpool and in England I truly felt like a player.”
