PSG coach Galtier explains why Keylor Navas’ Forest move means little to Donnarumma

PSG coach Christophe Galtier says Italy international Gigio Donnarumma ‘isn’t happier’ than he was before Keylor Navas’ loan move to Nottingham Forest in January.

Donnarumma has become PSG’s starting goalkeeper under Galtier this season after Mauricio Pochettino rotated him and Navas in Gigio’s debut season in Paris.

Navas has joined Premier League side Nottingham Forest on loan until the end of the season, but Galtier feels his transfer means little to Donnarumma who has played 29 games across all competitions this season.

“I didn’t need to feel freer,” Galtier said at a press conference.

“I had been very clear with Donnarumma and Keylor about the hierarchy. If I said he feels freer, it would mean Keylor didn’t do his job well.”

The Costa Rica international made 26 appearances across all competitions under Pochettino last season, while Donnarumma played 24 games but made two appearances more than his teammate in the Champions League.

“Keylor behaved perfectly in the last six months. He was focused, wanted to play and go at the World Cup, and is a professional,” the French coach.

“The attitude of both in training has been exemplary, there have never been problems between our goalkeepers. Now Sergio Rico is the second choice.

“I didn’t see Donnarumma happier than before. Gigio has always been very happy on the pitch and in the dressing room.”

The Italy international has 50 international caps under his belt and won the 2020 Euros, being named the best player in the tournament.

He joined PSG in 2021 after the end of his contract with Milan. Donnarumma played 251 games with Milan, winning a Supercoppa in 2016.
