The Italian Players’ Association thanked the Government and FIGC for setting up the ‘Salva Calcio’ Fund to ‘secure 2,000 Serie C players’ from financial ruin.
Serie A and B are due to resume from June 20, but Serie C will probably only have the promotion play-offs and relegation play-outs remaining.
Today, the FIGC announced it had established a fund worth €21.7m to help lower leagues avoid bankruptcy, with €5m going to Serie B sides, €5m to Serie C, €5m to amateur LND clubs, €3m for players, €3m for coaching staff and only €700,000 for the Women’s Football League.
“The fund is very important, as finally we have been able to turn the FIGC ruling into practical action,” AIC vice-president Umberto Calcagno told news agency ANSA.
“It is a first step worth €6m that allows us to secure 2,000 Serie C players, practically all those who were furloughed or made redundant. That’s 70 per cent of Serie C players who have been furloughed, and this will cover the difference in their salaries.”
