“We need a turnaround at Palermo, as we came out of the last game really badly,” said Pioli of their 1-0 home defeat to Udinese on Thursday night.

“In the first three rounds we showed progress in terms of performance, but on Thursday that was not the case. I have to take responsibility. It’s true we had injuries, but I am paid to deal with these things and we should’ve done better.

“All it took was for us to be slightly less aggressive in order to lose the game. I should’ve prepared the team better.

“I demand an aggressive and determined performance from the team. I saw in them the hunger to get back out there. We need to move up the table. We are in crisis, but only in terms of results.

“I look at the table and I am incredulous that we have only three points with these performances. And no, I am not kidding myself.

“It’ll be tough, as Palermo are also a difficult side to face and have quality forwards.”

This is a return to the Stadio Barbera for Pioli, this time as an opponent.

“My experience at Palermo was too brief, but Zamparini is honest and outspoken, like me. The President makes the decisions and at that moment he decided to fire me.”
