“Just the thought of wearing the Napoli jersey at the Stadio San Paolo is already giving me goosebumps,” Petagna told Raisport.
“It’ll be an honour to play alongside Mertens and Insigne, players I admire so much. Right now, I have to focus on getting SPAL safe, then I can think about Napoli. If I do both these things well, then I can aim for the Italy squad too.”
SPAL are in penultimate place with just 18 points from 26 rounds and fired coach Leonardo Semplici just before the lockdown, bringing in Gigi Di Biagio.
“It was all very strange at the start, being isolated and worried about family members, but we are starting to get back to training now, albeit in very small groups. Just being able to run on some grass was odd.
“This is all new to us, but we are professionals and have to be ready for anything. It’s all more difficult without our fans there, but we know how much they care and we certainly won’t be lacking motivation.
“Di Biagio is getting us to play very good football and I do feel an extra responsibility as the team’s top scorer.”
