Official: UEFA suspend action against Super League clubs

UEFA announced they have decided to ‘stay the proceedings until further notice’ against Juventus, Barcelona and Real Madrid over the Super League fiasco following new legal developments.

The three clubs are the only ones still clinging to the project, which was abandoned by all the other clubs within 48 hours.

They were due to face potentially damning repercussions from UEFA, including heavy fines and even exclusion from the Champions League.

However, a statement was released this afternoon that changes the situation.

“Following the opening of disciplinary proceedings against FC Barcelona, Juventus FC and Real Madrid CF for a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ project, the UEFA Appeals Body has decided to stay the proceedings until further notice.”

This is because the Madrid court injunction filed by the Super League organisers the day after the launch was delivered to UEFA offices on Saturday, via the Swiss authorities.

That means if UEFA did take action against the clubs and then failed to overturn the Madrid injunction, then they would be liable to pay damages to these clubs.

UEFA would have to challenge the decision before taking disciplinary action, otherwise they could be liable to prosecution themselves.
