Official: River v Boca in Madrid

Genoa have missed out on hosting the Copa Libertadores between River Plate and Boca Juniors, as it’ll be played in Madrid’s Bernabeu on December 9.

The Argentina derby was meant to conclude last Saturday, but was abandoned when the Boca bus was pelted with rocks and gas canisters, leaving two players with glass in their eyes and several more struggling to breathe.

Another attempt to play it a day later was also scrapped, so the decision was made to play it on neutral turf.

Qatar had been the favourites along with Asuncion in Paraguay, while the Mayor of Genoa confirmed he was “working on the possibility of bringing River Plate-Boca Juniors” to Marassi.

Instead, today CONMEBOL announced the fixture will be played at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu on December 9 at 19.30 GMT.

Both sets of fans are currently expected to have tickets, although it is hoped the more violent element won't make such a long trip to Spain.

River Plate have also been fined $400,000 and ordered to play two games behind closed doors.
