Official: Rafael Leao ‘very happy’ to sign new Milan contract

Rafael Leao is ‘very happy’ after signing a new contract with Milan, insisting it was ‘something I wanted to do,’ and is open to changing his jersey to a more iconic number.

The Portugal international put pen to paper on the preliminary documents three weeks ago, but today had the official signing and announcement of a new contract to June 2028.

“I am very happy. It’s something I wanted to do and now it is done,” Leao told reporters as he drove away from the club headquarters.

“We hope to do great things together in future. We reached an agreement and I am very happy. Now our focus goes to the Verona game and then next season when we want to win many important things.”

There have been reports in La Gazzetta dello Sport today that Leao is ready to change his jersey to the iconic Number 10 from next season.

“We’ll see. The 17 is a special number for me, but then we’ll see.”

The Portugal international has been at the club since 2019, notching up 41 goals and 29 assists in 162 competitive appearances.

Although the official statement does not include the details, multiple sources are confident it is worth €5m per season with a series of performance-related bonuses of up to €2m.

There is also a release clause set at €175m, but can only be activated during a very brief two-week window in July.
