Emerson Palmieri has officially completed his transfer from Roma to Chelsea for €20m plus up to €9m in bonuses.
The figures were confirmed by a Giallorossi statement after his medical today.
“AS Roma can confirm that defender Emerson Palmieri has joined Chelsea on a permanent transfer.
“The left-back joins the Premier League champions for an initial fee of €20 million. The agreement also includes a number of performance-related clauses, dependent on the achievements of both the English club and the player, worth up to a maximum of an additional €9m.
“The 23-year-old joined the Giallorossi from Brazilian club Santos on an initial loan deal in the summer of 2015, in a switch that was subsequently made permanent.
“In total he made 47 appearances for the club, scoring two goals – against AC Milan in Serie A on the last day of the 2015-16 season, and then against Villarreal in the knockout phase of last season's Europa League.
“Born in Brazil, last year Emerson completed the requirements to secure Italian citizenship – earning a first call-up for Italy’s national team prior to the end of the 2016-17 campaign.
“The club wishes Emerson well in his new challenge in the Premier League.”
Emerson also spoke to ChelseaFC.com about this new adventure in London.
“I came here because it’s a great team with a great history. Today I am realising one of my dreams to pull on the shirt of such a great club.
“English football is something I have been watching since I was 15 years old. It is a really beautiful game over here, but it is going to be even more beautiful to play it.”
He was presented by Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia.
“We are delighted to welcome Emerson to the club. He is a young and talented player who strengthens the squad and will provide excellent competition for places as we pursue success in three different competitions.”
